We are a group of people dedicated to social justice and joy sharing a house in the Uptown neighborhood at 1430 W. Leland.

There is no landlord – everyone who lives here is a partial owner of the house. Each person has an equal say in how the house is run and shares responsibility for keeping the house in good condition.

Members pay monthly charges that cover the house mortgage payment and other expenses.

Stone Soup Cooperative- Ashland House is seeking new members for Sept 1, 2010!

Stone Soup Cooperative is a 19 member housing cooperative located in the Uptown Neighborhood in Chicago. We are focused on nurturing social justice and joy. We pay $485 per month which includes all basic living expenses like rent, vegetarian food, utilities, internet access, phone, NY Times and Chicago Tribune subscriptions, and more. We live communally, share meals and all house responsibilities, and love consensus.

Stone Soup Hoyne is looking for another member to join us in cooperative living with a social justice vision. We are 6 people and two dogs in a two-flat brick home on Chicago’s near south side. The house has a finished basement, as well as a porch, backyard, garden, and lots of common space. Rent rages from $400-600 per person—this includes utilities—and $115 for food. A New Housing Cooperative is Taking Root in Chicago!

Bluestem Cooperative is designed to be an affordable community of homeowners. We wish to build on our existing diverse community of individuals and families who support one another, share resources, and act together on our vision of a just world.

We are looking for at least 2 – 3 more households to join our group. Each of the member households will occupy individual apartments and will share the ownership and management of the property. There is a lot of work involved in starting a new cooperative. All members are expected to actively participate in the development and operation of the cooperative.

Initial share prices are projected to be between $20,000 and $30,000. We are working to keep monthly costs between $1,000 and $1,400 per apartment.

Bluestem is structured as a limited-equity cooperative in an effort to maintain permanently affordable housing for future residents. The value of each share can increase over time, but this equity increase is restricted by the by-laws.
